For this assignment, you will need to record on video, a mock counseling session (pick anyone, but ask them to bring you something real if possible) using all of the basic skills and body language that you have learned up to this point ( weeks 1-4 – minimal encouragers, door openers, paraphrase/reflection of content, reflection of feeling, reflection of meaning, etc.). You will have access to week 4 early in case you would like to complete your assigned reading, videos, practice, and get a jump on this assignment. You will then select 15 minutes of the video to transcribe (using the format linked here – also called USE THIS FOR YOUR TRANSCRIPTS).
Then you will transcribe verbatim all that the client and you (the counselor) said. After you have transcribed everything, you will go back and provide comments concerning what you could have said or done better and label each skill.Just as I wouldn’t expect you to swim well after watching videos on swimming and doing a few lessons here and there, I’m not expecting you to be accurate and include all of the skills. What I am looking for is that you are able to recognize and properly label each of your interventions and given time to think about it, that you can come up with a more appropriate intervention. I am including a SAMPLE TRANSCRIPT here.
