With the United States and the Soviet Union being the only two real power players for decades after World War 2. I believe the cold war ended because of the soviets finally realizing that their system was a failure. With Gorbachev’s policys of glasnost and perestroika bringing in a new wave of democratic reforms and a push for individual freedoms and the right to private property, its easy to see the union collapsing on itself. Gorbachev himself seemed more open to the idea of the west than his hard line communist pals. He realized that the soviets were lacking in almost everything, especially their economy and way of life.
Gorbachev knew that they were lacking in all aspects of their technology, agriculture, and way of life. I believe he figured that for russia to survive, he had to work with the west. Once these reforms took off in the country, American and western advisors were sought out to help implement these ideas into practice. Once these reforms took off in the soviet union, many smaller countries in the eastern block followed suit. Effectively minimizing and forcing the communist machine to fall apart.
