Labeling System of Gender Binary System & Cultural Norms Discussion Paper

1.Topic: What has the pandemic revealed about the nature of “religion” in America?

2.Topic: “Love” and “Money” in American Couples.

3.This question is posed in the documentary, but you should answer it before watching. When we are born, we are designated as “M” or “F” for “male” or “female”. This label helps maintain a binary label system that restricts, confines, and “otherizes” those who don’t fit “the norm”. However, if there are no sex or gender labels, it becomes that much harder to track and try to reverse discrimination and injustice against marginalized and ostracized groups. In regards to gender, sex, sexuality, and orientation:

  • Should we expand our labels, or not have labels at all?
    • If you think we should expand our labels, explain what labels should be included, where does one draw the line, and what benefits might the labels (and lines) cause?
    • If you think we should not have labels at all, explain how discrimination against those who are different could be monitored and prevented?
