Data Analysis Worksheet (paper f)

Q1: What is your ‘Research Hypothesis’?

College aged students who identify as more liberal are more likely to engage in risky behaviors, while those identify as more conservative are less likely to engage in risky behaviors.

Q2: What is the “Null Hypothesis’ of your research?

There is no statistically significant relationship between political orientation and risky behaviors.

Q3: What is your independent variable? Be specific, list the survey questions that define your independent variable.

The independent variable is the students’ political affiliation. The survey questions help to identify where on the spectrum they fall by asking the following questions:

  1. Do you support gun control?
  2. Are you in support of abortion?
  3. Should immigrants in the US be allowed to stay here?
  4. Should traditional religion be separate from society and government?
  5. Do you think it is the responsibility of the federal government to make sure all Americans have health care coverage?

Q4: Is your independent variable ‘Categorical’?

Yes, the independent variable is political views, which doesn’t have any sort of numerical value, but we did use the survey questions to place where ideologies lie on a scale. In order for the data to be converted to numerical values.

—On a scale from 0 to 100 (like placing yourself on a thermometer…) where do you place yourself in support of the following phrases/words?

  1. Do you support gun control?
  2. Are you in support of abortion?
  3. Should immigrants in the US be allowed to stay here?
  4. Tradition religion should be separate from society and government
  5. Do you think it is the responsibility of the federal government to make sure all American have health care coverage?

Q5: Is your independent variable ‘Continuous’?

 No.

Q6: If your independent variable is categorical, how many groups are there?

5 groups: Extremely Liberal, Liberal, Moderate, Conservative, Extremely Conservative

Q7: What is your dependent variable? Be specific, list the survey questions that define your dependent variable.

The dependent variable is risky behavior. The survey questions help identify how risky one’s behavior is by asking the following questions with responses being on a scale from 0 to 100:

  1. How likely are you to accept a drink from a stranger?
  2. How likely are you to engage in unprotected sex?
  3. How likely are you to have sexual relations with someone you just met?
  4. How likely are you to experiment with recreational drugs?
  5. How likely are you to engage with more than one sexual partner at the same time?
  6. How likely are you to use marijuana?
  7. How likely are you to take prescription medications recreationally?

Q8: Is your dependent variable ‘Categorical’?

 No.

Q9: Is your dependent variable ‘Continuous’?

 Yes.

Q11: Based on your answers to Q4-Q5 and Q8-Q9, look up the statistical test table. List the statistical test that you should use.
